Edgework Power Skating School

Don't miss out on our 2008 Spring program!!

The ability to skate well is the foundation that all hockey players need if they want to succeed at any level of hockey. As players get older, their poor skating mechanics will hinder them and they will not be able to keep up with the pace of play at the next level.

Overspeed training, developed by Jack Blatherwick, is an outstanding program for players to increase their speed by utilizing off ice and on ice overload training to improve quickness and speed. But before taking this step a player needs to perfect the proper skating techniques.

“Underspeed skating” is my terminology to define the process of learning to skate correctly before learning to skate faster. A combination of proper skating techniques and overspeed training will then provide a stronger foundation for success. It is essential to develop the proper techniques at an early age because bad habits are very difficult to correct as the skater gets older.

Edgework Power Skating is based on the idea that players who have developed the proper skating techniques will be better players. In order to develop the correct techniques it is essential to get training in small groups where the player can receive quality instruction and have hundreds of quality repetitions of each skill.

All youth players will benefit from a consistent program of skating development. Our program provides two four-week camps with three sessions per week. Each session will have a short warm-up period and then 40 minutes of skating exercises and drills. The drills will be progressive through the 4 weeks. The program is open to boys and girls who wish to improve their skating techniques.
